My CIMsational First Week at Kellogg…

How do you turn groups of 70 - 90 total strangers into cohesive bonded units? Putting them through a crazy shared experience is one way, and Kellogg did not disappoint! On August 29th I started my orientation program, or CIM (Complete Immersion in Management) as it’s called at Kellogg. I mentioned in an earlier post that I was assigned to the Highlander section of the class of 2013. What I didn’t know was that I was about to meet 66 incredible people, and that by the end of the week we would be able to say that we accomplished some amazing things together.
We kicked off the week with a cheering competition between the sections, and it was fun booing my rival section (Poets) and supporting our sister section (Bullfrogs). Dean Blount gave an inspirational welcome address and discussed the future of business education and Kellogg. Robert Birge (Kellogg ‘99), Chief Marketing Officer of Kayak.com, challenged us to determine what experiences we wanted to get out of Kellogg and to work tirelessly towards achieving those goals.
CIM is also a competition between the sections, and unfortunately the 2013 Highlanders did not make Scotland or goats (our mascot) proud…we came in 7th place (out of 8) and routinely lost challenges to our rival section, but we had a great time together. My favorite activities for the week included building a vegetable garden for a local low-income community, dancing the Jai ho for CIM showcase, and laughing at my classmates during the CIM Olympics (watching future MBAs play dizzy bat is HIGHLY entertaining).
I am STILL recovering from my very first week of business school, and all I can say is that I am so excited to be an MBA student at Kellogg. It’s an amazing place, and I can tell that I will leave here infinitely better than when I came.
