Living the Dream…

70 years ago, my grandmother was unable to attend her senior prom because the hotel in downtown Philadelphia did not allow black people in the ballroom. Her high school art teacher told her that she would never travel the world to see the Mona Lisa or the Pyramids at Giza. When she started secretary school she was given a dilapidated typewriter that was reserved for “colored girls”.

Just 50 ago, my mother’s school bus was pelted with rocks and eggs as she rode to school because the color of the children’s skin within was black.

Today, I am able to attend one of the best business schools in the nation because of the sacrifices made by my grandparents and parents during the Civil Rights Movement. Today, I can sit in a room with students from around the world where we judge each other not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our characters and the experiences that we bring to the class.

On January 16, 2012 Americans celebrated Martin Luther King Day and remembered Dr. King’s great dream of equality for all. We have come a long way, and for that we should be proud. But, judging by the vitriol being spewed by the GOP presidential candidates, we still have miles to go.

P.S. - My grandmother quit that secretary school on the spot. She not only traveled to Paris and saw the Mona Lisa, to Egypt and saw the pyramids and King Tut’s tomb, but she also traveled throughout Western Africa, Haiti, and Brazil, and she put 2 children through college.
