Ads I Love…

My days of simply enjoying commercials for their entertainment value are over, or at least they are for now. Thanks to my Marketing class I can’t help but ask: “who is their target customer, what message are they trying to convey, and how big is the market for this product?” every time I see an ad that I enjoy. A few of my favorites are posted below.

Google:

Google’s user demo ads have been amazing. I loved the Lady Gaga and the “It Gets Better” ads but their “Dear Sophie” ad reduced me to tears when I first saw it a few months ago. The company was on campus recently giving their corporate presentation and I saw quite a few misty eyes when they showed “Dear Sophie” to my fellow classmates:

Airline Wars:

I’ve spent a lot of time this term applying Porter’s Five Forces to the airline industry (specifically the competition between Boeing and Airbus), so I’ve become interested in all things related to aviation. Check out this beautifully produced commercial from British Airways. It definitely appeals to my inner engineering geek, and I gained an appreciation for BA’s long history and the technological advances in flight (Loved the shot of the Concorde). I did a quick search for reviews of this ad however and it seems like people either loved it or hated it. The main complaint of the haters was that the commercial doesn’t directly connect how BA’s long history benefits the consumer.

Now compare the BA commercial with this one from Virgin Atlantic. Apparently everyone who works for Virgin is hot and their planes are like flying clubs complete with disco balls and dirty martinis. Very 007. I do love flying Virgin America though so maybe their strategy works! LOL.

What are your favorite commercials?
